How To Figure Out What To Do With Your Life (And Actually Do It!)

If you’re struggling to figure out your purpose, what to do with your life, and what career you should pursue, this article is for you. How to find your purpose is actually a simple process. What to do when you realize your job isn’t right for you is the harder part of the equation. In this article I explain why people stay stuck in jobs they don’t like when they’d really rather quit their 9 to 5s; how to discover your purpose and figure out the ideal career for you; and how to quit your job to pursue your dream.

Have you wanted to quit your job at any point in the last 3 months?

Or, more likely, every day for the last few weeks???

BUT, let me guess, none of your other options have you jumping out of bed exploding with joy and so you’re still at your 9 to 5

PLUS you’re not quite sure what you ACTUALLY want to do with your life so it’s probably best to stay put until you figure it out

The 3 biggest reasons 80% of people stay stuck in jobs they don’t like

First, they never define success for themselves…

Second, they ask themselves the wrong question…

Third, when they do glimpse their purpose, they talk themselves out of it

I want to explain all three and show you how to avoid falling into these traps so that you can build a purpose driven life exploding with joy!

Why Don’t I Know What To Do With My Life?

I’ve noticed a huge discrepancy between children’s books and guidance counselors.

Children’s books will write all about the possible careers you could have – astronaut, police officer, zookeeper, stage performer – everything under the sun!

Guidance counselors, parents, or distant relatives who offer unsolicited advice appear to think the traditional 9 to 5 is a cookie cutter solution that works for everyone, including you…

And we sit here wondering why we doubt our ability to succeed in a dream that falls outside of that…

The brain filters for repetition NOT accuracy

If you think deep down you could actually build an online business and travel the world full time, but all you’re hearing is that it’s better to stick with your 9 to 5, then stick you will!

Meanwhile, there are thousands of people working from their laptops in cafes all over the world, hiking mountains at 10am on a Monday, and living their best lives.

But because we don’t see that all too often, we wrongly assume that we, too, were destined for the 9 to 5 cubicle hell that our friends and family have settled for.

And that’s what really fires me up because…

The only thing standing between you and the life you dream of living is your belief that it is possible for you.

This is why you become the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Their beliefs become your beliefs.

Their patterns become your patterns.

And if all 5 of your friends have built online businesses and are buying their second homes in Croatia, but you’re here working a 9 to 5 to just barely cover your expenses, you’re going to get your sh*t together real quick and join your friends for a grand time.

But that’s just not the case for most people.

So until you find those 5 globe trotting friends, here’s what you can do RIGHT NOW to figure out what your purpose looks like

Get clear on your definition of success

Often, our definition of success has been ingrained in us by role models who value completely different things than we do.

Baby boomers might value security and stability and loyalty, and so their corporate job of 50 years was wonderful in their eyes. But if you don’t share those same values, if you prefer adventure, and new experiences, and making the most out of every minute of life, you won’t fare well in a traditional 9 to 5 corporate office job for 50 years.

You get to be very intentional in your decision: what DOES success look like to you?

If it isn’t the top of the corporate ladder and the corner office, what is it?

Here’s my personal definition of success:

I dare greatly to pursue what lights my heart on fire. I find joy in little moments every day. I infuse my relationships with my very best self and create meaningful memories with the people I love most. I honor my body and mind.

ANA MCRAE

This I can aspire toward.

This clarity helped me feel GOOD about my decision to leave my swanky corporate job and start a business I was passionate about.

If you want to start creating meaningful changes in life that bring you more happiness and fulfillment, you have to get clear on what success looks like TO YOU.

What’s your definition of success? Tell us in the comments below!

And if it still feels foggy in your head, let me guide you through it with this free SUCCESS PLANNING workbook.

The workbook will help you get really clear on what you value, what success means to you, and how to start putting it in action.

It’s not really about what, it’s about why

Answering the question “What do you want to do with your life?” is really hard

It’s hard because it’s the wrong question!

Your purpose isn’t about WHAT you do…

It’s about WHY you do it.

Why do you want to live your life?

For most of us, it comes down to meaning and enjoyment.

We want to have fun and we want to do something that matters.

Putting it that simply isn’t glamorous, but it’s honest.

When you know you are here to make a difference and enjoy the process, then you can start to uncover the unique ways in which you’re positioned to do that.

We can all make a difference in someone’s life using our unique skills. You could start a microbrewery that offers your community a place to connect and build relationships. You could open an online clothing boutique that helps people feel confident without breaking the bank. Either way, you’re making a difference.

So, instead of asking yourself which job you should take (out of 10 million options), ask yourself what difference you want to make?

  • What problem do you want to solve?
  • What feeling do you want to experience or help others experience?
  • What skills do you have that position you to solve that problem in your own unique way?

These questions can be tricky to answer when you’re emotionally overwhelmed with your current situation and can’t see the forest for the trees…

If that’s the case for you – if you’ve been getting nowhere trying to figure out what to do with your life – schedule your Clarity Call today, where I will help you understand your WHY and how to build your life around it, in 30 minutes, for free!

Why You Think You’re Crazy

I spend a lot of my time working with successful professionals in the corporate world who have realized the life they are living is out of alignment with their values.

They’ve spent years rising through the ranks in corporate America, taking promotion after promotion, buying the bigger house, the fancier car, and realizing the meaning of it all got lost somewhere along the way…

We do powerful work together.

I help them rediscover their purpose in 6 freaking sessions. What an amazing experience!

And that, folks, is the easy part.

They convince themselves that giving up “Director of [insert big company department here]” for “yoga instructor” or “life coach” or “Etsy seller” is absolutely insane.

Their head is flooded with the voices of critics who say they are crazy, and they listen to it.

Until they get back on a call with me and I call them out on it.

“You spent WEEKS getting clear on what you truly value, what you really want out of life, what would make you happiest, what is actually important to you, and you felt SO GOOD about your decision to build a fulfilling life… What changed?”

The answer is always nothing… except their thoughts.

And so that’s where we start.

How to manage your mindset when you’re working toward a big life change

Mindset work is SO important.

Period.

But doubly so when you’re working toward a big change.

There will be so many ways you attempt to sabotage your happiness and success in the process of changing careers.

  • You’ll convince yourself you can’t possibly do it
  • You’ll avoid the things that will actually make it real
  • You’ll be one step away from making it happen and you’ll chicken out

But as someone who has been through this, and has helped countless others through the process as well, I can tell you it’s 100% possible to create the life you imagine for yourself.

Here’s what you need to focus on to make it happen:

Write down your thoughts

Take everything your brain is throwing at you and get it down on paper. You have to name it to tame it! Once your general anxiety is on paper, you can tackle it sentence by sentence.

If you find yourself thinking “what if….”, keep going. Finish the sentence. What if? It’s usually not as bad as you think. Again, specifics really help.

Remember the change cycle is a normal psychological process

Expect to freak out. Expect to “forget” why you wanted to do this in the first place. Expect to backtrack.

When you know it’s normal, you can keep going. You can take action EVEN WHEN you’re scared.

Fear doesn’t mean stop.
